Little Big Horn
The original artwork was juried into the National Museum of Wildlife Art's summer exhibit "Above the Clouds: Art of the Alpine" from June 25 - September 18, 2022.
“Little Big Horn” was inspired by the title of the show “Above the clouds: Art of the Alpine.” Oil was chosen as the thick medium to arouse the full range of emotions of the Alpine. . . deep, dramatic, and powerful. The blue and gray tones help the viewer feel the cold, wind-blown alpine biome above the tree line.
The artwork is a realistic painting that depicts two bighorn sheep on a rugged mountain terrain against a misty and mountainous backdrop. The prominent figure in the foreground is a mature bighorn sheep standing confidently on a rocky outcrop, its textured coat rendered in earthy tones. The animal's muscular build is evident, and its head is turned to the side, showcasing a magnificent set of full-curl horns, indicative of its age and status.
Behind the dominant figure, a younger sheep, a lamb, is cautiously navigating a similar rocky terrain. Its posture suggests both curiosity and caution as it follows the path likely set by the older sheep. The color palette is naturalistic, dominated by grays, browns, and muted blues, echoing the serene and wild environment these animals inhabit.
The sky is a soft mix of blues, and clouds, suggesting early morning or late afternoon light. The mist adds a sense of depth and mystery to the scene, highlighting the sheep's adaptation to this environment. The artwork captures the majesty of these creatures and their symbiosis with the mountainous landscape.
The original oil painting is 30"H x 24"W x 1.5"D on gallery wrap canvas.
